Today in episode 3 of Talking Trash with Junk Run - we have another look at construction and demolition waste. We meet the team from ARA Charitable Trust in South Auckland. ARA take houses that would have otherwise been demolished - put them on their site near the Airport and they refurbish them with year 13 students from local South Auckland high schools. They are able to teach practical building skills to these students on their work experience - to inspire them into taking on roles in the construction industry. They also reuse second hand building materials provided by Junk Run. With a large number of college students leaving school to support their families, many students miss out on completing their education or risk being stuck in entry level jobs longer than necessary without a pathway forward. The Ara Education Charitable Trust teamed up with the Auckland Business Chamber, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Education and Auckland Airport to create the Ara Schools Job Expo. The event aims to combat this problem and provide students with solid employment options when they finish school this year.
